You may not think of the public library as much of an adventure, but the Fraser, Granby and Grand Lake libraries are unique, beautiful and worth a visit, even if your only excuse is to check your email! We are the most familiar with the Fraser library, being the closest to Winter Park. The library is situation so that the rear of the building looks out onto a natural scene of forest and meadow with an unobstructed view of snow-capped mountains in the distance (left picture). Inside, there are comfortable couches and over-stuffed chairs arranged to take full advantage of this delightful vista. The children’s area is charming, furbished with cushions lining the window seats, which makes a comfy nook for children to curl-up with good book. Computers with internet access are available to anyone, be they residents or visitors. While we were at the circulation desk, signing up for our 30-minute interval at the computer, my daughter noticed some lovely bookmarkers. Turns out, these watercolor scenes of mountains, pines and owls were hand-painted by a local artist, and selling for $2. Well, we couldn’t leave without purchasing a few! You may recall an ugly incident about a decade or so ago that involved a crazed-man running his supped-up tractor into some buildings in Granby, Colorado. One of the buildings was the public library, which has since been rebuilt. It sits on top of a small hill, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls (right picture). It has won architectual awards for its unique design. The views of the surrounding mountains and valleys are so lovely that I don’t know how anyone can focus on reading! The library in Grand Lake couldn’t be more different! Located in the very heart of the town, I mistook it for an over-sized log cabin until I saw their sign. Regretfully, it was Sunday when we wandered by, and they were closed. Enjoy! |
